Definition:

Biological therapy is a form of treatment of cancers and other illnesses that uses agents that affect the body's immune system.

The immune system of the body acts against diseases and infections and helps protect the body. The immune system is also called the lymph system. Read more about the lymph system in Understanding the Lymph System.

Biological therapy agents either stimulate the immune system of the body to act against the disease, or acts directly on the disease in a way similar to the immune system.

Some common biological therapy agents used in lymphomas are Rituximab (Mabthera/Rituxan), Interferons, Ibritumomab (Zevalin) and Tositumomab (Bexxar).
